The CLEP College Composition exam assesses writing skills taught in most first-year college composition courses. Those skills include analysis, argumentation, synthesis, usage, ability to recognize logical development, and research.
CLEP English Essay The English exam assesses whether candidates have read a wide variety of English literature and understand its basic development over literary periods. The exam requires candidates to write two essays on topics related to English literature.
The main concern with that test is the in text citations and essay formatting. Most people are able to score high enough on the multiple choice portion to offset any minor deficiency with their essay. Those that do fail this CLEP are the ones who panic during the essay portion.
In choosing answers, follow the rules of standard written English. Choose the answer that best expresses the meaning of the original sentence. Answer (A) is always the same as the underlined part. Choose answer (A) if you think the original sentence needs no revision.
My daughter took and passed the English Clep with minimal study, but English and writing are her strengths. Just a word of advice-- You might want to consider that testing out of Eng 101 requirements might not be in your best interest, as you're going to be expected to apply those writing abilities to future, higher-level courses and just passing the Clep won't prepare you for those.
The Clep Difficulty List is meant to be a starting guide to help you plan the order of the exams you wish to take. Study for all of them like they're level 5 and you'll never have to worry about being unprepared. Also, I've tried to group them in terms of difficulty by category as well.
